Hunting Story

It was an afternoon hunt on November 5.  My 7-year-old son Sawyer had been practicing all summer with his crossbow.  We had hunted a few times prior, and saw some deer, but could never get a shot.  We were sitting in a homemade, elevated blind that I had wrapped in camo netting to hide my son’s movement.  We were on the corner of a woods and fence row. We had been there for about 45 minutes when I heard some noise in the woods behind us.  I turned around to see a nice young buck coming through the woods and heading right toward us. My son’s jaw dropped and he was frozen for a second.  He grabbed the crossbow and put it up on his shooting rest. The buck walked out of the woods and stopped perfectly broadside at 10 yards. Sawyer squeezed off the shot and made a double lung shot.  We watched the buck run back into the woods, and the celebration began. Sawyer had to call a list of people, his mom, his grandpa, and his great grandpa. It was an amazing moment.

We gave the buck about an hour while waiting for his Grandparents and Great-Grandparents to come to the house to help us on the blood trail.  As soon as we followed the blood trail into the edge of the woods, the buck was laying about 10 yards in from the edge.

I haven’t killed a buck in a few years, but this hunting experience was better than any deer I could have harvested.
